AI won’t kill the designers (unless they refuse to adapt)
AI is changing the profession, but neither designers nor creatives are going to disappear.
Hi, I’m Dara, a designer, and there are many reasons why we’re not going to disappear, but I’m going to start with the most important one:
🤝 Clients hire designers because they want their products to look cool (puted in a very simplistic way).
Just because an AI creates art, doesn’t mean that clients knows how to communicate with the AI to get what they want. We will always be the link between the AI that generates art and the client.
The same thing happens with coding for example. The AI knows how to program, but if you don’t know programming, you won’t know what to ask it to do and you won’t know if it did it right or how to apply the result it gave you.
Another very important point is that for people who work in the creative field, “good visual taste” is practically something that is already part of them 🔍.
The famous “common sense”. There is a chance that your client doesn’t have it and that is why they hire you, or it could also be that they hire you because they don’t have the time or desire to learn about art, or maybe a little bit of both. Either way, you are now the connection between the AI and the client.
You can get angry and deny it, but that doesn’t make the client want to stop using AI. And even less with all the benefits that it gives. If you are creative and have already decided that you are not going to use these tools, you are within your rights but you should know that you’re at a complete disadvantage with the rest of the professionals who do use them 😅.
😔 It’s true that these changes will make only the most creative and technocratic designers stand out. This is a very hard truth that you must accept if you want to succeed ✊.
I was talking to a person who knows a lot more about technology, and he told me something very interesting:
That designers are going to become art curators more than art creators 👩🎨. And I think that’s where we’re going.
Of course we will always be creating, but a large part of our work will also be combining our creations with AI processes that we will have to curate and edit to deliver the final work.
The profession is going to become more technical and you need to learn to use those technologies right now. ChatGPT, Midjourney, Claude, Figma AI, Stable Difussion, Dall-e, Lora, all of them.
I completely understand the comments that are against tools like Figma’s AI for example, and I believe that there is always some truth in all opinions, and many of them are written from fear. And maybe from resentment.
I understand your anger and fear, but just because something feels ugly doesn’t make it a lie ❤️🩹. AI is here and it’s not going anywhere. In fact, it’s improving at the speed of light.
You have two paths:
Complain and not learn, which will delay your professional growth.
Accept what is happening and learn to use the tools to your advantage.
Yes, the profession is going to become more technical, but I think that at the same time art made 100% by humans is going to gain even more value.
Creativity will always be needed. The AI knows things but it doesn’t have a purpose, we give the purpose by asking it for things.
👆I wanted to show you this graph of how jobs on Upwork have gone down and up since ChatGPT launched. Almost all the jobs that have to do with writing and translation, unfortunately, are gone, but if you look closely at everything that is graphic design, web design and video editing, they surprisingly grew non-stop.
I think one of the reasons is that the more the number of complex tools grows, the more there will be a need for people capable of using them, and that also takes time ⏳.
And since it takes time to learn and mastery to use, and good taste so that you can take the results and improve them and create art from that inspiration; It’s why those jobs are so highly valued. And the more AI grows, the more designers capable of adding these tools to their creative processes will be paid.
This is a humble opinion from this freelance designer, I’m not trying to make you feel bad, I’m trying to encourage you ❤️🔥, the world is not about to end, you just have to know how to adapt to the context.
Just remember that the world will need us to communicate with the AI.
